In the free economy, swap bodies and a. Used in the construction industry , for example for the removal of building rubble . Here they are known as hook lifters, hook devices or hook dispensers.
Compared to the maintenance of a large number of special vehicles, swap-body systems offer the advantages of lower running costs, lower maintenance and personnel requirements. Compared to individual motorized special vehicles, however, if several containers are used at the same time, a time disadvantage may arise in use. This depends on the quantity ratio between the existing swap bodies and roll-off containers.
For the fire brigade and other emergency services , the containers can contain, for example, additional hose material , respiratory protection or radiation protection equipment , material for major technical assistance , hazardous goods operations or for environmental protection . From around 1955 the Mannheim fire brigade was already procuring demountable vehicles, and from the 1970s the Duisburg fire department , which also has an extensive inventory of swap-body vehicles, was another fire department with a demounting system, which was later replaced by a roll-off system. Other fire brigades followed them and the development in this area has made the swap body vehicle an indispensable tool for professional and many volunteer fire brigades .
The Bundeswehr also uses swap bodies , the so-called MULTI swap body system .
In order to increase the transport capacity, swap bodies can also pull a trailer with another container, which can be loaded and unloaded from the towing vehicle .
