The statue itself consists of 32 blocks made of Obernkirchen sandstone from the Schaumburg district . The sword and the crosses on the imperial orb and crown are made of wrought iron . The statue is 4.50 meters high and 1.50 meters wide. The base is 2.20 meters high.

meaning

The Wedel Roland wears the crown , in his right hand a drawn sword in his left hand the orb . It symbolizes trade and market rights in connection with the earlier ox market. On the front of the base is a coat of arms with a double-headed eagle. Another Roland on Ochsenweg is in Bad Bramstedt .

Preservation of the statue

Since 1558 the statue has been renovated several times. In 1653 after the Thirty Years War , in 1846, 1907, 1950, 1984 and most recently in 2012. In 1950 the Roland was moved to the north side of the market square. The base was originally made of sandstone and was replaced during the renovation in 1950 by a core made of concrete, encased in brick . The inscription on the back of the base, which had been painted on until then, was carved in 1950.
