The Hawthorn Segelflossendoktor ( Zebrasoma scopas ) is a kind from the family of surgeonfish .

The hawthorn sailfin doctor lives on the lagoons and coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to Japan .

As with all doctor fish species, the body of the hawthorn sailfin doctor is flattened at the side. It also has a high dorsal and anal fin that can be set up in an imposing manner. The body is brownish in color with a fine network drawing and reaches a length of up to 17 cm. The scalpels typical of surgeon fish are located on the root of the tail. There is also a yellow color form that looks confusingly similar to its close relative, the Yellow Sailfin Doctor ( Z. flavescens ).

The diurnal fish mainly eats algae. Adult fish form loose groups that can be seen eating in lagoons and outer reefs.

Aquarium keeping

Doctor fish are generally very delicate pets in aquariums . In this family, however, the hawthorn sailfin doctor is considered to be one of the simplest foster animals that have a long survival time in the aquarium. However, it is not as popular as its relatives because of its plain color. All fish offered in stores are caught in the wild, as breeding is not possible.
