The Yellow Segelflossendoktor ( Zebrasoma flavescens ), also yellow sail doctor fish or Hawaii surgeonfish called, is a kind from the family living in seawater surgeonfish .

distribution

The Yellow Sailfin Doctor lives mainly north of the equator and can be found in the western Pacific on the lagoons and coral reefs off the Marshall Islands , southern Japan to Hawaii and Australia .

Appearance

As with all doctor fish species, the body of the yellow sailfin doctor is flattened at the side. It also has a high dorsal and anal fin that can be set up in an imposing manner. The body is colored yellow and reaches a length of up to 20 cm. The scalpels or horn blades typical of doctor fish are located on the root of the tail .

behavior

The diurnal fish mainly eats algae. As a juvenile it lives solitary between the branches of finger corals . Adult fish form loose groups that can be seen eating in the surf area. As a special feature, the mood of this fish can be observed by changing the color of the eyes. If he behaves peacefully, the eye is brightly colored. In aggressive moods, on the other hand, the eye has a much darker color, which also stands out clearly against the body color.

Aquarium keeping

Doctor fish are generally very delicate pets in aquariums . In this family, however, the yellow sailfin doctor is considered to be one of the simplest foster animals that have a long survival time in the aquarium. For a long time, the breeding of the Hawaiian doctor fish was considered impossible, but in 2015 the offspring was first achieved.
