The White Kreuzplatz is about 50 by 100 meters large rectangular green space in Hannover in the district Oststadt , which is named after a set up there white cross stone.
location
The square is encompassed by the streets Friesenstraße, Weissekreuzstraße, Große Pfahlstraße and the Lister Meile . Opposite the southwest corner of the square is the culture and communication center pavilion . The A-route and B-route of the Hannover Stadtbahn run under the square .
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Weissekreuzplatz was the center of the eastern part of the city.
Name and story
The square is believed to have been named after a "White Cross Inn" from around the 17th century. The name of the inn is possibly based on the erection of a white cross at this point, which served as an atonement for the murderer Jaspar Hanebuth , who was executed in 1653 . Today there is again a white cross stone on the square.
In the early to mid-1970s, the square was redesigned to its present-day form when the first underground light rail line in Hanover was built. A green area that extends over almost the entire square was created, which is partially surrounded by arcades made of metal.
Todays use
The centrally located rectangular lawn is framed by parking spaces and on three sides by traffic-calmed streets. The lawn and the surrounding benches serve as a recreational area and occasionally as an event location. There are a number of restaurants and retail outlets on the street side facing Lister Meile .
The square is shaped by the central lawn. The surrounding benches are set in trellises for climbing roses . Single and rows of deciduous trees at the edge of the square complete the facility.
In May 2014 around 50 refugees from Sudan who were threatened with deportation occupied the Weissekreuzplatz with tents, organized peaceful demonstrations and some went on hunger strike to protest against their intended deportation. After Belit Onay , a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament , and other members of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen met for situation and aid discussions with the Sudanese on Weissekreuzplatz, the opening of the exhibition Blackbox Deportation took place in the pavilion opposite the cultural center .
