The white-winged duck ( Cairina scutulata ), and White-winged (-Moschus) duck called, is a species from the family of authentics ducks (Anatidae). It is critically endangered and listed in the IUCN Red List 2004 and in Appendix I of CITES . The population is estimated at around 1000 specimens.

Appearance

The body feathers are largely brown in color, the head and neck are spotted white, more dense in females than in drakes. The wings are brown with a few white spots, the white predominates when opened, hence the alternative name "Weißflügelente" (English White-winged (Wood) Duck ).

The Malay Duck inhabits wooded wetlands in India and Southeast Asia . Due to clearing and drainage and the associated reduction in habitat, it is threatened with extinction. The animals are predominantly crepuscular and feed on plants, seeds, fish , snails , spiders and insects .

The Mauser place in September or October instead, and the animals are, as with most major duck species, during this time unable to fly.

In the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in Assam (India) there are protected populations of the Malay Duck.

Reproduction

The sun duck breeds in the late dry season. The nest is made on trees 3–12 m above the ground. The female lays up to 16 eggs and the incubation period is 33 days. The chicks hatch when the first heavy rains start and are looked after by their parents for 14 days.

Breeding and keeping

Since 2013 there has been a Europe-wide conservation breeding program for this duck species in the form of a stud book ( ESB ) of the EAZA .
