The hoary serotine tensioner ( Agriopis leucophaearia ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (Geometridae).
features
The butterflies have a wingspan of 23–28 mm. Their coloration is very variable and ranges from almost black and white to gray. A wavy, narrow black band runs over the forewings at the edge of the basal region and at the outer end of the disk region. In addition, there is a black spot on the front wing edge in the disk region. The hind wings are light beige with fine black spots and a brownish border. The wings of the females have receded. The caterpillars have a black and yellow or black and beige stripe pattern.
distribution
The species is common in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. In the north, their occurrence extends to the British Isles and the south of Scandinavia. In the east the distribution area extends to Siberia.
Way of life
The butterfly species is mainly found in oak forests and in heathland with low-growing oaks. The butterflies fly in the spring from January to April. The (male) moths are attracted by light sources. The flightless females climb up the tree trunks where they are approached by the males. The caterpillar season lasts from April to early June. The caterpillars feed polyphagously on various deciduous and fruit trees, especially oaks , including pedunculate oak ( Quercus robur ), sessile oak ( Quercus petraea ) and downy oak ( Quercus pubescens ). In addition, the aspen ( Populus tremula ) and beech trees are named as host plants.
