The white-nosed shark ( Nasolamia velox ) is the only species in the genus Nasolamia within the Requiem sharks (Carcharhinidae). The species is distributed in the eastern Pacific from Baja California and the Gulf of California south to Peru .

Appearance and characteristics

The white-nosed shark is a slender shark with a maximum body length of 150 centimeters. It has a light gray to gray-brown body color and a whitish belly region without pattern. There is a black spot above the white-rimmed tip of the snout. Its habitus resembles the blue sharks of the genus Carcharhinus . It has an anal fin and two dorsal fins , the second dorsal fin and the one being significantly smaller than the first. They are also characterized by a pointed snout with closely spaced nostrils. He also has no spray hole .

Way of life

The white-nosed shark is a shallow water species and probably feeds predatory on various fish and crustaceans on the shore zones. The sharks are viviparous and form a yolk sac placenta ( placental viviparous ). The females get about 5 young animals with a length of about 55 cm in one litter.

The species is distributed in the eastern Pacific from Baja California and the Gulf of California south to Peru . This is a shallow water inhabitant who prefers depths of 15 to 25 meters, maximum catches come from about 190 meters depth.
