Big Spring - former habitat of the white stripe fundulus

The White Stripe Fundulus ( Fundulus albolineatus ) is an extinct freshwater fish from the Fundulidae family . It was endemic to the Huntsville, Alabama region .

description

The status of the white stripe fundulus is controversial. There are only 25 badly preserved museum specimens. While some scientists believe that these specimens could be the species Fundulus julisia , which still exists today , it was described as different from Fundulus julisia in 1982 . It reached a length of eight to nine centimeters. The sexes exhibited moderate sexual dimorphism .

die out

The white stripe fundulus was last detected in 1889. As far as is known today, this species only occurred in Indian Creek , a river between Big Spring (a karst spring in Madison County ) and the Tennessee River . Its extinction is due to the destruction of its habitat. Indian Creek was canalized and Big Spring served as the primary water supply for the city of Huntsville until 1957. Today it is part of Big Spring International Park, an amusement park in downtown Huntsville.
