Jaroslav Špillar

Jaroslav Špillar (born October 11, 1869 in Pilsen , † November 20, 1917 in the asylum Dobřany ) was a Czech painter.
Life
Jaroslav Špillar was the older brother of the painter Karel Špillar . He attended the arts and crafts school in Prague in 1885 and was a student of František Ženišek and Jakob Schikaneder . From 1887 to 1890 he studied at the academy under Pirner and Sequens. In 1888 he got to know the Chodian region in southwest Bohemia with its rich folk culture and settled here in Postřekov in 1891 , later in Pec pod Čerchovem . Špillar made numerous trips to Italy , Paris , Jassy in Romania , where he was involved in the painting of a church in 1893, Bulgaria and several times to Munich . Since 1904 he had a mental illness that increasingly prevented him from continuing to work. He was buried in the family grave in Šťáhlavy .
Works
Jaroslav Špillar was successful as a painter during his lifetime. He mainly created realistic genre pictures depicting the folk culture of the Chodian region. They are also valuable from an ethnographic point of view, as they accurately represent numerous folk customs. In Domažlice there is the Špillar Gallery , which shows works by him and his brother Karel.
