Karel Špillar

Karel Špillar (born November 21, 1871 in Pilsen , † April 7, 1939 in Prague ) was a Czech painter and graphic artist of Art Nouveau .

Life

Karel Špillar was the younger brother of the painter Jaroslav Špillar . He attended grammar school in Prague and then studied from 1885-1893 at the Prague School of Applied Arts with František Ženíšek decorative painting and at the same time from 1887-1892 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague .

Špillar had a studio in Prague with his friend Jan Preisler . After completing his studies, he traveled to Italy , Spain and London several times . From 1902 to 1908 he stayed in France , mainly in Paris and Onival in Normandy , where there was a Czech artist colony with TF Šimon, Hugo Boettinger and Otakar Španiel . The death of his father and the illness of his brother forced him to return to Prague. There he succeeded Preisler in 1912 as a teacher of life drawing at the arts and crafts school. In 1925 he became a full professor. In the summer months he stayed from 1910 in the blast furnace in South Bohemia , where he had taken over his brother's studio, 1930–1931 in Brittany .

Since 1896, Špillar was a member of the Mánes artists' association .

As a painter, Špillar was a representative of synthetism and mainly created scenes from big city life. He also painted nudes . As a craftsman, he produced numerous decorative works in the Art Nouveau style, made posters, illustrations (e.g. for the magazine Volné směry ) and bookplates (e.g. for Jindřich Jindřich and the writer Jan Vrba). Is known Špillar still for several murals in Prague and the mosaic Apotheosis of Prague on the local community center .

Špillar's works are in the National Gallery in Prague and in the Západočeská Gallery in Pilsen.

Honors

On November 10, 2010, as part of the Art on Postage Stamp series , the Czech Post issued a 30 CZK stamp showing the painting Spring from 1912 (Prague, National Gallery) by Karel Špillar.
