Vistula (ship, 1937)

The Vistula was a former cargo steamer called Syra , which was converted into a submarine tender by the German Navy and used in World War II .

The 2465 BRT large Syra expired in May 1923 at the Howaldtswerken in Kiel from the stack . She drove for the German Levante Line (DLL), from 1926 for HAPAG .

Navy

On August 28, 1936, the ship was bought by the Navy. After reconstruction in the Stettiner Oderwerke it was put into service on April 7, 1937 under the name Weichsel as a submarine tender. It was 106.7 m long, 13.5 m wide and had a draft of 5.23 m. The water displacement was 3974 t standard and 5090 t maximum. A triple expansion steam engine allowed a top speed of 12 knots . The regular crew consisted of 222 men, the armament of one 8.8-cm flak , four 3.7-cm flak and four 2-cm flak.

The Vistula was initially assigned to the 1st U-Flotilla , then on October 4, 1937, it joined the 3rd U-Flotilla , which was newly established that day , in March 1938 again to the 1st U-Flotilla, and during the war to the 22nd U-Flotilla . U-Flotilla in Gotenhafen .

Whereabouts

At the end of the war the ship was in Wilhelmshaven . It became British spoils of war and operated under the name Royal Rupert in 1945/46 . After being declared Soviet spoils of war, it was handed over to the Soviet Navy on February 8, 1946 . On July 24, 1946, came in the North Sea , and on 22 August 1946 was in the Northern Fleet under the name Doniez asked (russ .: Донец) into service. The ship was decommissioned on December 1, 1960 and scrapped from January 18, 1961.
