The Vistula Bridge near Marienwerder ( Polish Most w Opaleniu ) was the fifth railway bridge over the Vistula (after the bridges in Dirschau ( Tczew ), Thorn ( Toruń ), Graudenz ( Grudziądz ) and Fordon ( Bydgoszcz )).
It was built between 1905 and 1909 between Münsterwalde ( Opalenie ) and Marienwerder ( Kwidzyn ) and led the Marienwerder – Schmentau railway across the river. The combined rail and road bridge was intended to free the then capital of the Marienwerder administrative district from its isolated location. One track was separated from the two-lane carriageway for road traffic by a grid. At both ends there were massive portals that could be closed by gates.
The 1058 m long bridge had 10 openings with pillar spacing of 2 × 80 + 5 × 132 + 3 × 80. The steel structure above the 5 main openings consisted of semi-parabolic girders, the shorter side openings had parallel-chorded lattice girders. The execution was divided into sections between three companies: Harkort company in Duisburg , Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen and Vereinigte Königs- and Laurahütte in Königshütte , Upper Silesia .
The bridge temporarily gained strategic importance during the First World War . After the Treaty of Versailles and the formation of the Polish Corridor , Marienwerder became a part of East Prussia, while the bridge and the western side of the Vistula became Polish. Rail traffic was no longer planned. The largely useless bridge was therefore dismantled between 1927 and 1930 and used for the construction of the Józef Piłsudski Bridge in Toruń . The concrete pillars of the bridge are still in the Vistula today.
