The Franz Keller winery is located in Oberbergen (Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl) in the Baden wine-growing region in Germany .

history

Since January 2014, the winery with locations such as Oberbergener Bassgeige, Achkarrer Schlossberg, Oberrotweiler Kirchberg, Oberrotweiler Eichberg, Jechtinger Enselberg has been a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries . The estate was founded around the turn of the century, between 1895 and 1900, and is now run in the third generation by Fritz Keller , who has also been president of the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg since 2010 . He took it over in 1990 from his father Franz Keller (1927-2007), who became known as an opponent of the large land consolidation in the 1970s and 1980s and made a name for himself as an advocate of barrique expansion and fermented wines. Franz Keller also advocated reducing the yield in wine production. The company includes the “Schwarzer Adler” hotel, whose restaurant has been awarded one star in the Michelin Guide since 1969 , the “KellerWirtschaft” in the new winery, as well as the “Rebstock” winery and the wine trade. In addition to the focus on the sale of classic wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy , the range also includes wines from other important growing areas in Europe.

Growing area / soil

The Kaiserstuhl is the warmest wine region in Germany. A few kilometers northwest of Freiburg im Breisgau , the Kaiserstuhl rises between the Black Forest and the Vosges 16 kilometers long and up to 12.5 kilometers wide at a height of almost 600 meters from the Rhine plain. The heavily eroded mountains arose from a volcano that was active around 15 million years ago. The volcanic weathered rock was z. T. subsequently covered with a layer of loess . The vines take root deep in the black soil to get water and thus also minerals.

The winery

Embedded in the landscape, the winery also offers insights into the production processes thanks to its terrace-like building, which is adapted to the cultural landscape of the Kaiserstuhl. Grape processing, wine cellar, bottling and bottle storage are combined on 4000 m². The energy concept: Green roofs, energy-conscious, sustainable and resource-saving construction, among other things by using the natural insulation possibilities of the ground and gravity.
