Lanius-Knab winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lanius-Knab winery is located in the town of Oberwesel on the Middle Rhine and is run by the married couple Jörg Lanius and Anja Lanius-Kastien. It has been a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP for short) since 1995 . Around 35,000 bottles of wine are produced annually from the approximately 8 hectare cultivation area, the average yield is 55 hl / ha.

history

Viticulture has been a tradition that has been passed on in the Lanius-Knab family for over 250 years. It is even assumed that the family history goes back to the Romans, who settled the Middle Rhine 2000 years ago and brought the art of viticulture with them. In 1991, Jörg Lanius took over his parents' business after completing a classic winemaking apprenticeship and studying viticulture. In previous years of traveling on wineries in Tuscany, South Africa and New Zealand, the winemaker deepened his knowledge in order to further expand the business. His wife Anja Lanius-Kastien is a trained tax clerk and accountant and is responsible for the organization and customer care.

Locations

The Oberweseler Oelsberg

The Oberweseler Oelsberg is located north of Oberwesel as a pure southern exposure in the bend of the Rhine. Its incline is 63%. Due to the connection between the slate soil typical of the Middle Rhine, the loess loam and the red sandstone, the soil structure proves to be unusually greasy. The straight Rhine inflow onto the Oelsberg also creates particularly favorable solar radiation.

Oberwesel locations

Amber the angel

The Engelhöller Bernstein stretches in a side valley of the Rhine from the city of Oberwesel to the Engehöll district , which is 1.5 km away. The accumulation of heat, which is caused by the amphitheater-like arching of the valley and the high proportion of stones, promotes heat storage and thus ensures a long and even vegetation period. The high mountain peaks also provide natural wind protection. The vines are only located on the southern slope, where the soil is mainly characterized by its high mineral content.

The Engehöller Goldemund

The soil of Engehöller Goldemund consists of a combination of slate soil with embedded quartzite and a high proportion of clay.

Grape varieties and manufacturing process

With 90% of all the vines grown by the Lanius-Knab estate, the white Riesling variety clearly predominates, which is typical for the Middle Rhine, as Riesling covers a total of three quarters of the area here. Another 8% of the vines belong to the red grape variety Pinot Noir . The remaining 2% of the vineyard area is planted with the Müller-Thurgau variety. After the harvest, the wine is first matured in stainless steel tanks with the grape's own yeasts before it is finally matured in oak barrels.

Awards

particularities

The Lanius-Knab winery has its own logo. The rider and quadriga are shown on it, which is supposed to allude to Roman prehistory. The name Lanius is probably of Roman origin. However, it is also possible that it only dates back to the Middle Ages, as there was a phase in which names were romanized.
