The winery was founded in 1873 by Vincenz Anton Richter, a colonel in the imperial army, and has now been in the family for four generations. It is currently managed by Thomas Herrlich. The family runs the Vincenz Richter wine restaurant in Meißen, also founded in 1873 , which has also been family-owned since it was founded and presents the winery products in a gastronomic way. The house has an antique collection with over 500 originals from several centuries.

In 1993, the winery expanded its annual production to 15,000 bottles by leasing 1.5 hectares of vineyards in the Weinböhlaer Gellertberg ( Großlage Schlossweinberg ) area. After a new cellar was completed in 1994, a new sales room went into operation in 1995. In the same year, new machines and cellar technology were used for the first time, so that, for example, bottles no longer had to be labeled and encapsulated by hand. In 1997 the company produced ice wine for the first time and was expanded by purchasing 1.75 hectares of Riesling land from trust. New facilities made it possible for the first time to ferment wines under cold conditions and to fill them in a cold sterile manner with candle filters .

In 1999 the company acquired the half-timbered house at Kapitelholzsteig 1 from the city of Meißen. The property was used by the Meißner Stadtweingut ( Meißner Kapitelberg ) until 1953 and then by VEG (Z) Weinbau Radebeul , among others .

In 2000, the winery was first described in Gault Millau . In the same year the company received its first international award. As part of the international wine comparison Internationales Vinalies Enologues de France of the Union of Oenologists of France and the Union of International Oenologists, the 1998 Meißner Kapitelberg Riesling - Spätlese rated was included in the book "1000 Vins du Monde, la selection de enologues".

The Elbe flood in 2002 flooded the wine cellar and the warehouse of the winery by 1.2 m. In 2003, Vincenz Richter was the first winery in Saxony to install drip irrigation at its Meißner Kapitelberg location in the Oberspaar district . At ProWein 2004, the company received the DLG certificate as a certified winery . In 2006 the winery expanded its areas by clearing and replanting the Bosel site by 3000 m² ( Scheurebe grape variety ); In the Spaar Mountains, the area under vines also increased through the exchange and purchase of land.

After the production and storage conditions on Dresdner Strasse increasingly proved to be spatially inadequate, the winery relocated its entire wine production as well as storage, office and social rooms to the listed farm on Kapitelholzsteig from 2006. The new location was expanded almost exclusively underground. In addition to 900 m² for wine production, the new location also includes 250 m² for marketing. In addition to a vinotheque , tasting and training rooms, a wine museum was also created.
