List of apple varieties

Weirouge is the name of a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). It is identical to the Red Moon variety bred by the Russian pomologist Michurin in 1915 .

The European plant variety protection for Weirouge was withdrawn a long time ago after the renowned German pomologist Hans-Joachim Bannier made the temporary owner of the plant variety protection aware of the identity. The original Weirouge tree was found nameless in a house garden.

The variety is characterized by its red skin and completely red pulp. The intense red color is caused by an unusually high content of anthocyanins . The pulp remains red even after processing and the juice of this variety is also red. Due to its low sugar and high acid content, it is unsuitable as a table apple. In addition to the fruits, the flowers and leaves as well as the bark also have a characteristic red color.

The fruits ripen from around the end of August.

The variety is very robust against diseases such as apple scab . However, especially the fruits are attacked by powdery mildew .

breeding

The Bavarian Fruit Center in Hallbergmoos has now successfully crossed Weirouge and a breeding clone that is also suitable for consumption. This variety is called Baya Marisa .

As with Weirouge, Baya Marisa has a distinctive red flesh. Baya Marisa with its fruit acidity and the sweetness developed from the end of August is ideal for consumption. The sweetness of a Boskop is definitely not achieved. It is ideal as an apple for fruit cakes. Baya Marisa trees are quite unproductive for the first 5–7 years. The flower is an intense red.
