The undulating highlands at approx. 500  m above sea level. A. is part of the Bohemian Massif , a Variscan mountain hull. It extends from Geras to just before Retz , connects to the Thayatal in the south and extends to the Horner Basin and the Eggenburg Basin . Because of the low rainfall, arable farming is only practiced in the lowlands, while the gentle mountain ranges are forested. Originally, mixed deciduous forests dominated here, today it is spruce forests. Near-natural tree populations can still be found in some cases along the water.

Weitersfeld formation

Embedded in it are the Weitersfeld Formation, which starts from Waschbach and extends over Weitersfeld and consists of marine to brackish clays and loams from the Eggenburgium and the Ottnangium . To the southwest, in the area around Weitersfeld, these are present in greater thickness and are widespread.
