Ottnangium

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ottnangian (also Ottnang stage or Ottnangien, also shortened to Ottnang) is a regional chronostratigraphic stage of the Miocene ( Neogene ) in the central Paratethys area. It corresponds roughly to the middle part of the international chronostratigraphic level of the Burdigalium . The Ottnangium can therefore be placed approximately in the period from 18.3 to 17 million years. In the central Paratethys, the regional stage of the Ottnangium is followed by the regional stage of the Carpathian ; it follows the Eggenburgium .

Naming and stratotype

The step is named after Ottnang am Hausruck ( Upper Austria ), in the vicinity of which there is also the stratotype profile , an old Schliergrube at the ski jump at Wolfsegg am Hausruck .

The step was proposed in 1967 by the Austrian geologists Adolf Papp and Fred Rögl . It is almost universally used in the Paratethys field.

definition

The lower limit of the regional level of the Ottnangium is defined by the appearance of the scallops Flabellipecten hermannensis , Chlamys submalvinae , Chlamys pavonacea , Chlamys albina and Pecten fotensis . The upper limit is marked by the first appearance of the orbulinic foraminifera genus Praeorbulina .
