NHK ni Yōkoso! ( Japanese N ・ H ・ K に よ う こ そ! , NHK ni Yōkoso!, English "Welcome to the NHK") is a light novel by the Japanese author Tatsuhiko Takimoto . The series was also known as Manga and Anime - TV series implemented.

The plot revolves around Tatsuhiro Satō, who lives isolated from society without work or training and then makes contact with other people again. The work can be assigned to the genres of comedy , drama and romanticism .

action

Tatsuhiro Satō ( 佐藤 達 広 ) flew from university four years ago and has been unemployed since then. He is a so-called hikikomori who only stays at home all day, doesn't go to work and shy away from contact with other people. Over time, he also developed a conspiracy theory of how he got into this situation. So behind it is supposed to be an organization, the NHK, that wants to turn people into Hikikomori. The victims would be influenced by the media and agents around them.

One day, however, he meets the girl Misaki Nakahara ( 中原 岬 ) at his doorstep , who wants to save him from his fate. She offers him a contract, after which she will lead him back to normal life. Tatsuhiro doesn't want to know anything about it and says he would develop computer games. To convince her of this, he wants to show her a game he developed himself. When he finds out that his neighbor is Kaoru Yamazaki ( 山崎 薫 ), an old school friend of his from the literature club that programs computer games, he wants to program an erotic game with Tatsuhiro . Kaoru has been an otaku , a passionate anime fan, since he was in school. Meanwhile, Tatsuhiro visits Misaki's lectures at 9 o'clock sharp in the park so that he can free himself from his misery, the hikikomori state. Over time, however, he increasingly neglects his job as a script writer and his meetings with Misaki.

Tatsuhiro later also meets Hitomi Kashiwa ( 柏 瞳 ), whom he also knows from the literature club. She is a civil servant and is often stressed out, which is why she takes drugs. She is fascinated by conspiracy theories, which is why she believes Tatsuhiro. She also has a boyfriend, with whom she initially has problems because his behavior makes her feel that she means nothing to him. This ultimately leads to Kashiwa going on vacation with Satō. On the way you meet the three friends who are taking part in the vacation. However, Satō does not yet know anything about the real reason for the "offline meeting". The five then travel by boat to an isolated island. On the island, everyone except Satō is depressed. Satō tries to lighten the mood, but is rejected by everyone. As a result, he tries to set up a campfire on his own, but he can't do it on his own, so everyone goes out to help him. Only in the evening around the campfire is the reason for the “off-meeting” revealed. This last meeting is said to end in mass suicide. Satō, who initially does not want to kill himself, tries ineffectively to prevent the suicide attempt. It is only when the five of them step onto the cliff that one of them collapses and cannot bring himself to bear. A chain reaction follows up to Kashiwa. She wants to kill herself anyway, because for her the world is still full of conspiracies that bring her misfortune. Shortly before her jump, she is stopped by her boyfriend, who quickly found out about the meeting. He immediately set off for the island by boat with Misaki and Yamazaki. Nobody knows about their stay, however, as it is pitch dark. Surprisingly, Satō, who was the only one against it before, wants to kill himself because he has learned about his own life. Misaki, who asks him over a megaphone, manages to dissuade Satō from killing himself. When he turned his back on the cliff, however, he slipped and was able to hold onto with one hand. He's fighting for his life until the other four get together and pull him back upstairs. Satō and Misaki, who were about to lose each other, moan. Now it is up to the eight to fight the way back to the main island and the way back to life. The focus shifts from the group back to Satō.

On their return to the main island, Kashiwa's friend booked a hotel stay for the five. Yamazaki and Misaki make their way back shortly after arriving at the hotel without saying anything. A day later they all say goodbye to each other and go home with the seeds of a new hope. Previously, one of the three friends told Kashiwas Satō about an MMORPG , gave him a one-month voucher for the MMORPG and also showed Tatsuhiro a way to make money online. He told him about "Real Money Trading" (RMT), which means something like exchanging items that can be obtained in the game for real money.

At home, before he starts playing the MMORPG, Satō is caught off guard by a phone call from his mother. She explains to her son that she has to cut his financial support because his father has lost his job. Tatsuhiro sees only one option: intensive gaming to finance his rent with RMT. On the way to reaching the RMT, he quickly learns the basics of an MMORPG, such as playing in a group. This idea is impossible for him, as a Hikikomori, which is why he tries to get by on his own at first, without success. Some time later he meets a female avatar named "Mia", who looks like a Nekomimi , whose real identity is actually Yamazaki, who wants to teach Satō a lesson about MMORPGs and his poor work behavior. When Yamazaki confronts him with reality, Satō is completely shocked because he had developed feelings of love for Mia. Yamazaki also convinces him that anyone can be who they want to be on the Internet and that only the luckiest of the lucky ones have the chance to benefit from the RMT. Kaoru aims to win back Satō for Eroge. In a rage, Satō tries to kill Yamazaki with a chair, but he escapes from the room in time. Satō, who now sees no more opportunity to earn money, is hopelessly devastated until he receives a call from a former classmate.

Backgrounds and themes

The work deals with various problems of modern Japanese society, such as the Hikikomori or the stressed employees. An insight is given into several fates, which are often marked by loneliness.

The organization NHK refers to the real television station Nippon Hōso Kyōkai , the Japanese state television. In the novel as in the manga, the broadcaster is portrayed as part of the conspiracy, while in the television series it does not exist as such. The Nippon Hōso Kyōkai also runs a site to help Hikikomori.
