Wellstead is a small town in the Australian state of Western Australia . It is located about 73 kilometers northeast of Albany and 476 kilometers east of Perth . The place is located in the traditional settlement area of ​​the Aboriginal tribe of the Mineng .

history

The agricultural pioneer John Wellstead and his wife Ann came to what is now the area around 1860 and settled there. This family and their descendants worked land between Cape Riche and Bremer Bay . The village and the surrounding area were shaped by agriculture. That changed in the 1960s when the government released land for purchase and built a telephone switchboard on it in 1965, which attracted employment. In the same year the government gave the village the name of the first settler.

Wellstead is bordered to the west by Kojaneerup South , to the north by Gnowellen , to the south by Mettler and to the northwest by Boxwood Hill .

To the east, Wellstead has about 40 kilometers of coast on the Great Australian Bight , of which about 25 kilometers consist of beach. Here you will find the beaches Schooner Beach , Long Beach , Willyun Beach , Ledge Point , Cape Riche and Boat Harbor . Cheyne Island is off the coast . To the south of Wellstead is the Cape Riche headland , which separates Cheyne Bay from the open ocean. The hills Mount Belches , Mount Catherine and Mount George lie on it . The Eyre River flows through the village into the Cheyne Inlet . In addition, the headland Ledge Point and Mount Groper are located in the village .
