The World Maritime University (WMU; dt. Weltschifffahrts-Universität ) was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization . Its headquarters are in Malmö (Sweden). There are further campuses in Shanghai and Dalian (both in China ). The goals are uniform training for students and technical cooperation.
The international university is part of the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations (London). The university is co-financed by the Swedish government .
The following degrees are possible for postgraduates : Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Science (MSc) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD); further degrees are offered in the Chinese branches: Master of Science in International Transport & Logistics and Master of Science in Maritime Safety & Environmental Management . The distance learning Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Insurance course is offered in collaboration with Lloyd's Maritime Academy.
By 2010, 3,040 students had completed courses at the WMU.
