Apprenticeship and high school diploma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apprenticeship and Matura (also teaching with A-levels or vocational diploma or apprenticeship with matriculation examination ) is a form of education accompanying Matura in Austria. It was developed in Tyrol and Carinthia and introduced across Austria in a standardized way by the Federal Ministry of Education from 2009 .

Since 2009 it has been possible to complete the apprenticeship and the Matura in dual training . In addition to the apprenticeship training, the apprentice attends the preparation for the Matura and the relevant vocational school . The apprentice concludes with 2 certificates: a final apprenticeship examination certificate and a vocational school certificate . The apprentice submits the four partial examination certificates for the Matura preparatory courses after completing their apprenticeship at the school at which they took the school examination (depending on the apprenticeship and subject area) and thus receives a full Matura certificate , such as the maturity and diploma exams from a vocational college . This Matura qualification entitles the graduates to study at a technical college or university in Austria as well as for positions in the higher administrative service.

history

In 1997 a federal law, the Berufsreifeprüfungsgesetz (Berufsreifeprüfungsgesetz) created the possibility of taking the Matura after completing an apprenticeship examination. On the basis of this law, a financing model for apprentices attending the vocational maturity examination at a vocational school was developed in 1999 by the State of Tyrol, the Tyrol State School Council and the Tyrol Institute for Professional Development (BFI). In 2004 the first model was developed, which was later discussed as the apprenticeship and Matura concept , and was financed for the first time in 2008 by the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce as part of a pilot project ; of 160 applicants, the best 28 were accepted. At the end of 2008, the costs of further courses were initially taken over by the State of Tyrol and the Tyrol Chamber of Commerce, after which this Tyrolean model of "apprenticeship and Matura" was included in the financial support of the federal government and has been offered free of charge for applicants throughout Austria since 2009.

The model is financed by the federal and state governments. The implementing educational institutions are the Institute for Economic Development (WIFI) and the Institute for Professional Development (BFI). Cooperation partners are the vocational schools.

New regulation of the funding guidelines from January 1, 2016

For participants who start their apprenticeship and Matura from January 1, 2016, the revised funding guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education (BMB) apply , which regulate the framework for teaching and Matura. these are

  • A multi-stage admissions process with an introductory phase and a final interview
  • A course-based organization that is not based on the school year but on a subject
  • At least one successfully completed Matura partial examination before the end of the apprenticeship in order to receive further funding after the apprenticeship
  • Continued funding of training for a maximum of three years after the end of the apprenticeship
  • As before, participants who joined the model before 2016 have a maximum of further funding of 5 years after completing their apprenticeship.

Development of the federal model for teaching and Matura

In contrast to the vocational matriculation examination ( vocational school leaving certificate, school leaving certificate after completing the apprenticeship), the apprentice completes the school leaving certificate during the apprenticeship using the apprenticeship and school leaving certificate . Nothing changes in the classic apprenticeship, you can also take the Matura in every apprenticeship, regardless of the type of apprenticeship and the duration of the apprenticeship.

In addition to the regular apprenticeship training, the apprentice attends courses in German, mathematics and English each with 180 hours and the specialist course with 150 hours. The apprentice can attend the courses in the ( integrated model , day course during the apprenticeship) or 1–3 evenings per week ( accompanying model , evening variant, Matura preparation course in their free time).

  • Curriculum : Since 2011, teaching and Matura courses have been based on a new, competence-based curriculum
  • Apprenticeship extension: An apprenticeship extension can be used with the integrated model, the decision on this is incumbent on the training company. For an apprenticeship and high school graduation apprentice, the training company can choose between monetary support or an extension of the apprenticeship.
  • Vocational school: In the event of a time overlap with the Matura courses, the apprentice has to attend the vocational school.

The apprentice can terminate the Matura training at any time, this has no consequences for the apprenticeship training. There are no costs. In no case does the apprentice lose the apprenticeship position when they drop out of the Matura. Conversely, it is not possible to break off the apprenticeship and only finish the Matura education, as the apprenticeship is part of the Matura education. If the apprentice breaks off the apprenticeship, he also loses the opportunity to complete the Matura in this way. If the apprentice loses his apprenticeship position through no fault of his own, he has a buffer period of 3 months to find a new apprenticeship position where he can do an apprenticeship and graduation. During these three months, the apprentice attends the Matura course as usual. If he cannot find a suitable apprenticeship position, he has to leave the model or switch to the accompanying model.

Development of the teaching and Matura model at WIFI Tirol from January 1, 2016

The apprenticeship and Matura at WIFI Tirol was due to the restructured and carried out the correct implementation. With this implementation, every apprentice has an improved chance of successfully passing a Matura partial examination before completing the apprenticeship and further funding of the teaching and Matura model after completing the apprenticeship. The Matura training in the teaching and Matura model will be divided into two sections from 2016. Entry is now possible monthly and all year round without an apprenticeship or Matura check.

Section 1 Teaching and Matura WIFI Tirol
Section 1 includes starting information on teaching and Matura, a visit to the basic learning studio in the subjects of German, mathematics and English, each with 12 teaching units per subject, preparation for the final test as well as an advisory and Application process to advance to the second section.

Section 2 Teaching and Matura WIFI Tirol
Section 2 comprises the Lema Matura courses with 180 hours each in English, German and mathematics and the Matura learning studio with 30 hours per subject as well as the Matura exams in German, mathematics, English and in the subject area. The learning studio Matura is an intensive preparation course for the respective Matura exam and takes place several times a year before the Matura exams. The learning studios are part of the Matura training and participation is compulsory. The Matura exams take place after completing a course and the Matura learning studio. The Lema Matura courses can be attended in the evening or on Friday in the morning or afternoon. The courses can be counted towards the working time regardless of the time model (integrated model).

Admission requirements for apprenticeship and Matura

(using the example of Tyrol) Attending the Matura courses free of charge and taking exams free of charge as part of apprenticeship and Matura is possible because the training is funded by the state of Austria. In order to participate in the training, the following guidelines must be met:

  • Apprenticeship in Tyrol or
  • Place of residence in Tyrol or
  • Attended the vocational school in Tyrol

The apprenticeship and Matura training forms can only be started after the 9th year of compulsory schooling. With the integrated model, the training company must agree to this form of training and conclude its own apprenticeship contract.

Apprenticeship and Matura check

The apprenticeship and matura check is a prerequisite at BFI Tirol in order to start apprenticeship and matura training. The check has consisted of 2 parts since 2013:

  1. Subject-specific orientation test: an entrance test must be taken in the subjects of German, mathematics and English. This test covers the subject matter of a 4th grade secondary school (formerly 1st performance group). The test must be completed on the computer and is carried out using a multiple choice procedure.
  2. The one-on-one interview is an important part of the consultation. In this personal interview, the apprentice's living and professional situation is analyzed and assessed.

Training paths / models

Integrated model

The integrated model provides that the apprentice also completes the Matura courses during the apprenticeship training. For this purpose, the apprentice is released from the company half a day per week to attend the Matura course during working hours or the time the apprentice spends in the Matura course can be counted towards the working hours. This makes it possible to visit the integrated model when attending the evening course. The approval of the training company is a prerequisite. The training company then also decides in which form the Matura courses are integrated into the apprenticeship: In the integrated model, these special agreements between the apprentice and the training company (leave of absence, possible extension of the apprenticeship period) are recorded in writing.

  • Variation without an extension of the apprenticeship period : The apprenticeship period remains unchanged as intended for the respective occupation. By attending the Matura courses, the apprentice spends less training time in the company.
  • Variant with an apprenticeship extension: The apprenticeship can be extended by half a year.

If the apprentice attends the Matura course during working hours and the apprenticeship period is not extended, the company providing the training can apply for funding. As part of the new federal funding for apprenticeships, handled by the Chamber of Commerce's apprenticeship offices, preparation for the vocational maturity test can be funded as an inter-company and inter-company training measure. The course times are funded to the extent of the gross apprentice compensation.

requirement

  • Real apprenticeship contract
  • Crediting of course times against working hours
  • No extension of the apprenticeship
  • Proof of attendance (school attendance confirmation)

Accompanying model

In the accompanying model , the apprenticeship training remains completely unaffected by the Matura courses. The apprentice attends the Matura courses in his spare time. This means that the apprenticeship and Matura can also be completed completely independently of the teaching company and without changing the apprenticeship contract. The advantage is that the courses are individually staggered and can be completed up to five years or, from January 1, 2016, three years after the final apprenticeship examination.

Matura exams

According to the Berufsreifeprüfungsgesetz, the Matura examination is taken in the subjects German, mathematics, English and in the specialist area. The Matura exam is taken at the end of each part of the training. A Matura course comprises 240 hours (45 minutes each) (general subjects) or 180 hours (45 minutes each) (specialist area). The apprentices attend a total of 900 teaching units in preparatory courses.

When taking the vocational maturity examination, please note: Three of the four partial exams can be taken before the final apprenticeship examination. At least one partial examination must be completed after the final apprenticeship examination. The last partial examination may be taken at the earliest when they are 19 years of age.

As of April 1, 2017, the vocational maturity examination is a central Matura , in which the general written examination tasks are drawn up by the Ministry of Education and a uniform examination date is set for all of Austria. In the case of the Central Matura, the assessment criteria are uniformly specified so that the performance of the Matura students across Austria and across schools is transparent and comparable.

subject area

Subject areas of the vocational school leaving certificate for Tyrol

Depending on the apprenticeship that an apprentice pursues, he is assigned to a department. A Matura examination must be taken in this department.

The departmental Matura must be taken orally and in writing and is usually taken at an external school (with the exception of the commercial department - this Matura examination is taken at the WIFI / BFI and corrected by an external teacher at a school). The application for the respective department takes place in the first school year. The choice of department is binding and cannot be changed later.

The external school examination is automatically determined by the choice of the department. The apprentice then receives the school leaving certificate from this school (after having provided evidence of the 4 partial examination certificates and the apprenticeship certificate). The Matura certificate is not issued by the WIFI or BFI.

Coaching

The apprentices are looked after by trained social workers throughout their training. The aim of this supervision is to impart extracurricular skills and knowledge such as time management, self-organization, consistency and self-motivation, which are required for completing the apprenticeship and Matura. Furthermore, social skills and competencies are to be imparted, such as dealing with exam anxiety, individually adapted learning strategies and general social behavior in the group. The coaching partner also has the task of being a point of contact for all those involved in addition to the apprentice, such as the parents, the training company, individual trainers and other participants, as well as a contact person who is bound to confidentiality for all worries and concerns of the apprentice himself . These meetings are compulsory events that are held after the lessons if possible.

costs

The course costs for apprenticeship and Matura training are covered by the federal government, provided that the following criteria are observed:

  • the participant is in a teaching relationship or in a §30 BAG course
  • the preliminary courses and advice were concluded positively
  • a training contract with an educational institute has been concluded

The federal government will pay the course costs for a further three years after the apprenticeship has been completed, if

  • At least one examination (partial Matura examination) has taken place before completing the apprenticeship (the examination must be positive since January 1, 2016)

Special regulations

  • If the first partial Matura examination is not passed within the apprenticeship period, a further start is possible within four months after the end of the apprenticeship period
  • If there are appropriate reasons such as parental leave or military or community service or illnesses, an application can be made to extend the financing for a further year.

In the apprenticeship and Matura model, apprentices have free access to one preparatory course and three exams (four exams from January 1, 2016) per subject. All other courses and tuition must be paid for by yourself. If you want to attend an additional preparatory course before taking your second or third Matura, this is not free. A failed Matura is not a reason for termination or a reason to drop out of the model. You can take the other courses and Matura exams,
