history

The first synagogue in Bielefeld from 1847 on Klosterplatz

Some parts of the building date from the late Middle Ages , but were largely built over in the following centuries. Parts of the upper floor and the street front can be dated to 1537. In particular, the roof structure should be mentioned here. The half-timbered structure of the building is plastered on the street side, visible to the courtyard. The western section dates mainly from the early 18th century. The half-timbering of the upper floor and the doors of the courtyard facade also date from around 1710. Around 1764 the - not listed - courtyard wing was built as a single-storey extension. The roof structure was also given its current shape at this time. In the 19th century, the late classicist front door, a second floor of the courtyard wing and, above all, the stair tower were added. This is an octagon in its outer shape , but round on the inside. A special feature of the interior are three expressionistically designed rooms from the years 1919–1920. There is also a stone alliance coat of arms of the von Schloen and von Wendt families next to the front door .

The farm initially served as a residential building for the von Wendt family and was taken over by the von Kessel family in 1718. Around 1800 it was donated to the Jewish community in Bielefeld . This used the building until 1847 the synagogue at Klosterplatz 5 was inaugurated as a prayer room. In 1850 the Biermann wine shop took over the house. The wine bars operated by these owners have recently given way to a brewery with a beer garden .
