Tiled house and Mirabellenplatz

The tiled house in the Mitte district of the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia is a monument from 1927.

location

The corner house is located at Hagenbruchstrasse 13 on the corner with Goldstrasse in Bielefeld's old town. The monastery square and the St. Jodokus church are in the immediate vicinity . The place in front of the house is called Mirabellenplatz. The Wendtsche Hof is also located here .

history

The house was built in 1927 for the grocer Wilhelm Harms. The architect was Paul Löwenthal. The ground floor is characterized by the almost continuous shop window fronts on both streets. The upper floor through the round corner bay window above the entrance and the 8 or 9 window axes. Originally a second floor was to be built, but the unfavorable soil conditions with loose sand and the increased costs - instead of 180,000, 200,000 marks had to be invested - prompted the client to downsize the plan. The tiled house got its name from the green exterior cladding made in Meißen . The interior is also decorated with ceramic tiles from Meissen. When it was built, the tiled house was not only remarkable because of its appearance, but also because of the technical equipment with a cold store and neon light.

The house survived the Second World War unscathed and the interior furnishings on the ground floor have also been preserved. After several conversions, the 200 m² former shop area is now a café that has integrated the old furnishings into the furniture.

Others

The following slogan can be read on the facade: Paul Löwenthal designed this house, Wilhelm Harms spun the wire. If we had known what it was, we would have known. During the National Socialist era , the first part with the reference to the Jewish architect was removed. After 1945 it was added again.

Löwenthal's daughter, the writer Karen Gershon , actually Käthe Löwenthal, dedicated a poem in exile to her hometown Bielefeld and the tile house. It's called Wilhelm Harms' House . In it she also addresses the handling of her father's name.
