Wenceslaus Warich
Wenzeslaus Warich ( Upper Sorbian Wjacław Warichius or Wjacław Wawrich ; * 1564 in Gröditz , † September 5, 1618 in Göda ) was a Sorbian theologian and writer. He is considered a pioneer of the Upper Sorbian written language .
Wenzeslaus Warich was the son of a manorial administrator in Gröditz. He attended the school in his hometown and then the Latin school in Bautzen . He also studied in Wittenberg and took over the diaconate in 1587 and, two years later, the pastor's office in Göda near Bautzen, where he worked as a pastor until his death.
In 1594 Warich published the Sorbian translation of Luther's catechism . This is the oldest known print in the Upper Sorbian language.
