Vera Nikolaevna Kublanovskaya

Vera Nikolaevna Kublanovskaya (born Totubalina, Russian Вера Николаевна Кублановская , English transcription Vera Nikolaevna Kublanovskaya; born November 21, 1920 in Krokino near Belosersk ; † February 21, 2012 ) was a Russian mathematician. In 1961 she developed the QR algorithm for determining eigenvalues independently of John GF Francis .

Life

Kublanowskaja was one of nine children in a farming family. She attended a course for primary school teachers and was accepted into the Gertzen Pedagogical Institute in Leningrad because of her excellent grades , where she was noticed by the mathematics professors Dmitri Konstantinowitsch Faddejew and Gregor Michailowitsch Fichtenholz because of her mathematical talent. During the Second World War she returned to Krokino because her mother was ill. She was a teacher there and gave political lessons as a Politruk .

From 1945 she studied mathematics at the Leningrad State University with a recommendation from Faddejew and from 1948 she was at the Steklov Institute in Leningrad, where she stayed for the rest of her career. There she was initially occupied with secret numerical calculations for nuclear reactors under the direction of Leonid Kantorowitsch until 1955 . The work meant that she could not travel abroad for a long time. In addition to their secret research she wrote her dissertation and in 1955 a doctorate ( The application of analytic continuation in numerical methods of analysis ).

She also married and had two sons. From 1955 she was part of a group led by Wera Faddejewa , which implemented a new computer language Prorab, for which she mainly wrote algorithms for linear algebra. As part of this work, she also developed the QR algorithm (called the method of one-sided rotation in Russian literature ) and many other algorithms in numerical linear algebra . 1972 habilitation they are with the work " The use of orthogonal transformations to solve problems in algebra" .
