Werexcastel

Werexcastel or Weierscastel is a castle stable west of Niederwürzbach in the Saarpfalz district in Saarland . The location is in the Landscheid forest on the Ommersheim district . The system was first described by Heinz Spies in 1975 under the name Werexcastel . However, this name is a wrong reading of the handwritten text on the Tilemann-Stella card from 1564, the only known historical evidence for the name.

location

The remains of the former tower castle are located in the Landscheider Forest south of the Niederwürzbacher Weiher , about halfway between Niederwürzbach and Oberwürzbach above the L111 road, off the beaten track. The castle is shown on the map of Zweibrücken and Kirkel by Tilemann Stella from 1564 under the name Weierscastel . The not exactly realistic illustration shows a square tower with two buildings without access in the middle of the forest. The handwritten entry is also the only proof of the name of the castle and was reproduced in 1975 by Heinz Spies using the reading Werexcastel . In 1989 the reading “Peterscastel” (or Weierscastel?) Is found for the same document . The Palatinate Castle Lexicon lists the property in 2007 under the lemma "Weierscastel".

investment

Only sparse remains of walls and traces of a tower have survived from the complex.

history

Neither the time of construction nor the time of destruction are available. The Palatinate Castle Lexicon contradicts the assumption that the complex can be dated to the 11th or 12th century, and indeed the assessment as a castle in general, and suggests classification as a slightly secured late medieval watch tower .
