history

In the caves of the Eichertsfels north of Oberwürzbach there are traces of early human settlement. Oberwürzbach was first mentioned in a document from Abbot Konrad von Hornbach in 1181 when he sold a piece of land in Wercebach to the Wadgassen Abbey . Historians estimate that the village existed for 200 to 300 years before it was first mentioned. This is indicated by the name ending -bach. Many properties and the abbey’s own courtyard in Oberwürzbach bear witness to the close connection with the abbey.

The first private possessions in Oberwürzbach are mentioned in documents from the 15th century. A register from 1426 shows that the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken also had possessions in Oberwürzbach. In the 16th century the village was under the rule of the Lords of Eltz as a fief .

The Thirty Years War (1618–1648) led to the destruction and depopulation of the place, and families did not settle again until 1660. But as early as 1677 Oberwürzbach was destroyed again when French troops who marched into the Palatinate in 1673, while retreating, set fire to imperial troops . Ten years after these events there were again new settlers in Oberwürzbach, which at that time belonged to the rulership of the Counts von der Leyen .

In the coalition wars that broke out in the years of the French Revolution , the French army tried to penetrate from Lorraine and Alsace into the area of what is now the Saar-Palatinate district and thus made Oberwürzbach a theater of war. On September 27, 1793, the Prussian Colonel Blücher met with Generals von Kalckreuth and von Knobelsdorff in Oberwürzbach to discuss the next steps against the French. The Prussian and Saxon troops managed to repeatedly push the French back to the Saar , but ultimately had to retreat to Kaiserslautern . As a result, the left bank of the Rhine was occupied by France and annexed in 1797. Thus Oberwürzbach became French.

After the Congress of Vienna , the place became part of the Rhine district in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1815 . In 1852 Oberwürzbach left the community of St. Ingbert and merged with the communities of Ommersheim and Heckendalheim to form a community that was administered by the mayor's office in Ommersheim.

After the First World War , the provisions of the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919 meant that Oberwürzbach was in the Saar area from 1920 to 1935 , which was placed under French administration for 15 years with a mandate from the League of Nations .

On January 1, 1925, the village became independent by being separated from the mayor's office in Ommersheim and given its own mayor's office. The two hamlets of Reichenbrunn and Rittersmühle were added to this on January 13, 1937 .

After the outbreak of World War II , the entire population was evacuated to Thuringia and Upper Franconia on September 1 and 2, 1939 , as Oberwürzbach was in the red zone . In October 1939 the place was shelled by French artillery . After the end of the French campaign, many residents returned at the beginning of August 1940. In the summer of 1944 fighting broke out again, first in the form of air raids, then in the form of the US offensive under General Patton , which reached Oberwürzbach on the morning of March 20, 1945 at 8:30 a.m.

After the Second World War , Oberwürzbach was initially in the French occupation zone before it became part of the Saar Protectorate from 1946 to the end of 1956 .

On January 1, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Oberwürzbach was incorporated into the city of St. Ingbert with four other municipalities as part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform.
