The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium (WHG) is a scientific, technical and linguistic high school founded in 1876 in Weinheim , Baden-Württemberg , which was named in April 1988 after Werner Heisenberg , a Nobel laureate in physics .

history

It began in 1876 with the merger of the Bender Institute and the Higher Citizens School under the direction of Dietrich Bender. The Bender Institute, the predecessor of the Heisenberg Gymnasium, was founded by Bender and his brother as early as 1829 and developed into a boys' institute known far beyond the country's borders.

Today's Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium offers a linguistic and a natural science course and has several computer rooms, an extensive student library and its own sports hall with outdoor facilities. It is attended by around 1000 students from Weinheim and the surrounding communities of Hirschberg , Birkenau and Gorxheimertal and also Abtsteinach , Mörlenbach and Oberflockenbach etc. There are around 80 teachers. Gabriele Franke has been the head teacher since the 2017/2018 school year.

When the school building was inaugurated in 1901, it was considered the most beautiful school building in the Grand Duchy of Baden. In 1954 and 1971, the old school complex was expanded by two more parts, which had become necessary due to the increasing number of pupils from initially 160 to over 850. In February 2001 the school was thoroughly renovated. The last expansion and renovation took place in 2010.
