Athletic career

In the summer of 1960, at the age of 19, Werner Bamberger came from Motor Wema Plauen to the Aue- based league team of SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt. After a few games in the reserve team, he came to his first league game on October 5, 1960 against SC Lok Leipzig (4-0). Bamberger played nine of the 26 point games as a striker this season, in which he scored seven goals. In the same season, SC Wismut played as the current GDR soccer champion in the European Cup . Bamberger was in all three games of the Wismut team against Rapid Vienna and scored one goal.

With increasing time, however, its low level of competition became noticeable. In his second league season (1961/62) Bamberger was only used in four point games. The other games he played only in the reserve team.

After the unsatisfactory record of only 13 league stakes, Bamberger turned his back on the league at the end of 1961 and signed up again for the 1962/63 season with the third division Motor Wema Plauen, where his brother Heinz Bamberger was already playing. After a season with the Bamberger brothers, Wema Plauen rose to the first GDR league . The GDR league season 1965/66 was extremely successful for Werner Bamberger. With his team he reached 3rd place in the League Season South, was not only Plauen's most successful goalscorer with 20 goals, but also top scorer in the GDR League together with Günter Kluge from Meiningen. This season, Bamberger played all point games for Plauen. In the following years he was successful for his team on the hunt for goals, in 1970/71 he was again league top scorer with 16 goals. When Wema Plauen had to relegate from the GDR league in the summer of 1973, Werner Bamberger ended his career as an active soccer player at the age of 32.
