Werner Fechter (born February 27, 1910 in Karlsruhe , † June 28, 1994 in Titisee-Neustadt ) was a German German philologist.

Fechter studied from 1929 in Freiburg, Innsbruck and Heidelberg, where he was a member of Catholic student associations in the Association of Scientific Catholic Student Associations Unitas . After receiving his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1935 ( The Audience of Middle High German Poetry , a standard work in the sociology of literature), Fechter was unable to pursue the desired academic career because he refused to join the NSDAP. After many years in school service, most recently at the Bertholdgymnasium in Freiburg im Breisgau (1948–1966), he completed his habilitation in 1963. 1966–1969 he was a scientific advisor at the German seminar in Freiburg, from 1969 until his retirement in 1972 he was an adjunct professor.

Fechter has made important research contributions, particularly in the field of manuscript research and the history of transmission. His reconstruction of the medieval manuscript library of the Inzigkofen monastery was published posthumously .
