Werner Garten (born May 30, 1930 ) is a former German football player.

Career

After Garten had contested the 1951/52 season in Group I of the 2nd Oberliga West for Eintracht Gelsenkirchen , but this had to be relegated to Group 3 of the Landesliga Westfalen , he moved to FC Schalke 04 .

For Schalke he came from 1952 to 1958 in the Oberliga West , one of five seasons as the highest German division. In his first season he was used in ten league games, where he made his debut on October 26, 1952 (9th matchday) in a 2-1 win in the away game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen ; his club finished the season in sixth place. In the following season he contributed to third place with 28 point games. His last season, in which he was only used seven times and played his last league game on March 9, 1958 (26th matchday) in a 1-1 draw at home against Meidericher SV , was crowned by two titles. First he won the West German championship with one point ahead of 1. FC Cologne , then the German championship in 1958, but he was not used in the final round. For FC Schalke 04, he completed a total of 89 league games in which he was without a goal. He was also used five times in the competition for the DFB Cup . He made his debut on August 15, 1954 in the preliminary round meeting with SSV Jahn Regensburg . Since they found no winner after the 1-1 draw after extra time , he also played the replay that he won 6-3 on September 1, 1954 in Regensburg. Against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 he had to play a replay with the Schalke side after the round of 16 on September 26th also failed to produce a winner with 1-1 after extra time; this was won 1-0. After his team reached the final in the quarter and semi- finals, he was used again. The final, held in Braunschweig on May 21, 1955 in front of 25,000 spectators, was lost 2: 3, as Oswald Traub from Karlsruher SC scored the winning goal in the 86th minute.
