Werner Gramberg

Werner Gramberg (born July 26, 1896 in Lyck ; † September 4, 1985 in Hamburg ) was a German art historian .

Life

Gramberg, son of the administrative lawyer Arthur Gramberg and his wife Anna (née Ganzert). He attended the humanistic grammar school in Gumbinnen and then the royal Friedrichskollegium in Königsberg , where he passed his Abitur in 1917; His high school education was interrupted by his participation in the First World War from 1914 to 1918. He first studied from 1919 in Königsberg and Munich and worked in the art trade from 1921 to 1924. He then studied art history in Berlin, Vienna and Freiburg and received his doctorate in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1928 under Hans Jantzen and Walter Friedlaender . In 1932/33 he received a scholarship at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome. In May 1933 the job he had been promised as curator for Italian sculpture at the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Berlin failed due to the non-Aryan descent of his wife. Attempts to emigrate failed; he lived with his family in Berlin under difficult conditions.

In 1949 he became head of the Münzkabinett at the Hamburger Kunsthalle , and from 1951 until his retirement in 1960 he was head of the sculpture department and deputy director there. In addition, he taught from 1957 as an honorary professor for art history and from 1969 as a professor (§ 73 UniG) for art history at the University of Hamburg .

His specialty was Italian plastic. Among other things, he wrote the articles on Guglielmo , Theodoro and Tommaso della Porta for the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present .
