Werner Kloos

Werner Kloos (born November 23, 1909 in Friedberg (Hesse) ; † June 26, 1990 in Bremen ) was a German art historian , museum director and author.

Life

After attending grammar school in Darmstadt , Kloos studied art history, archeology and medieval history in Frankfurt, Freiburg, Vienna and Munich. He received his doctorate on a topic on medieval art and then volunteered at the State Museum in Darmstadt . Then he was assistant and curator and from 1941 head of the Hamburger Kunsthalle . In the meantime he was called up for military service and became a prisoner of war .

Kloos worked as a freelance author from 1948 before he was appointed to the Focke Museum in Bremen in 1953 . There he promoted its expansion. A new building was inaugurated in 1964. From 1952 to 1972 he was also the state monument curator in Bremen.

Kloos wrote several works on Bremen's cultural history and also a Bremen lexicon , which has appeared in three editions since 1977. In 1974 he retired.
