Werner H. Meyer (born July 21, 1937 in Basel ) is a Swiss historian and medieval archaeologist .

Life

After completing his university studies in Basel, Werner Meyer worked for several years as a high school teacher and also carried out historical and archaeological research. In 1965 he received his doctorate. phil. with the dissertation on the subject: The Löwenburg in the Bernese Jura . In 1970 he completed his habilitation at the University of Basel, his teaching areas were older Swiss history and archeology of the Middle Ages. In 1975 Meyer was appointed associate professor . From 1989 to 2004 he was full professor for Medieval History at the University of Basel .

His main focus was medieval archeology. He made a special contribution to researching medieval castles in Switzerland and is therefore also called "Burgen-Meyer". He published numerous books on the history of Switzerland in the Middle Ages, such as 1977 The Great Castle Book of Switzerland. He fought against historical myths in public , for example with the book Switzerland in History, Volume 1: 700–1700. In 1977 he was honored with the Science Prize of the City of Basel . He was President from 1973 to 1997 and has been Honorary President of the Swiss Castle Association since 1998 .
