Werner Pleßmann (born August 31, 1928 in Herten ; † December 30, 1972 in Aachen ) was a German geologist and university professor at RWTH Aachen University .

Scientific career

After graduating from high school, Pleßmann began studying geology in Bonn in 1949 , which he later continued in Graz . He received his doctorate in 1953 with a thesis on the geological conditions on the western edge of the Bay of Graz . From 1959 to 1964 he was assistant at the Geology and Palaeontology Institute of the University of Göttingen , where he joined in 1959 with the work flow brands in clastic sediments and their geological interpretation habilitated . In 1965 he was appointed associate professor . Two years later, he was appointed to the chair for geology and paleontology at RWTH Aachen University, which he held until his death.

Research work

Pleßmann mainly dealt with tectonic research work; His areas of work were the Rhenish Slate Mountains , the Harz Mountains and the Alps . He turned to experimental methods, for example, he examined deformed rocks with sound waves in order to record the extent of the deformation with quantitative methods. One of the most important results of his work is the proof that the pressure solution plays an important role in the formation of the foliation .
