Werner Schmidt

Werner Schmidt (born October 5, 1943 in Waghäusel ) is a German doctor specializing in gynecology and obstetrics . For 21 years he held the chair for gynecology, obstetrics and reproductive medicine at the Saarland University in Homburg.

Life

After graduating from the Justus-Knecht-Gymnasium in Bruchsal in 1965, he first studied medicine in Frankfurt am Main , then Schmidt continued his studies at Heidelberg University until the medical state examination in 1971. He received his doctorate in 1971 and was granted his license to practice medicine on February 7, 1973. He is married and has two children.

From 1972 to 1974 he worked as a DFG fellow at the Institute for Immunology and Serology at the University of Heidelberg . From November 1974 he worked as a research assistant at the University Women's Clinic in Heidelberg. The specialist certification took place on November 5, 1980 with simultaneous appointment as senior physician. From September 1985 he was the senior physician in charge and representative of the clinic director. The professorship for life was awarded to him in February 1987. From 1984 to 1985 he worked clinically and scientifically as a visiting professor at Yale University Medical School New Haven, Connecticut USA with the support of the DFG. From 1987 to 1988 he was appointed provisional director of the University Women's Clinic in Heidelberg. From September 1988 he headed the University Women's Clinic in Homburg, and he was appointed to the chair for gynecology on November 10, 1989.

From 1991 to 1999 he was the editor of the yearbook for gynecology and obstetrics at Biermann-Verlag / Zülpich.

The scientific focus of his work was the evaluation of new monitoring methods in perinatology / obstetrics, e.g. B. Kinetocardiotocography, expansion of biophysical examination methods, ultrasound monitoring / biometry, Doppler sonography and prenatal diagnosis in high-risk pregnancies, in surgical gynecology z. B. Early diagnosis / treatment for breast cancer and gynecological tumors, introduction of plastic-reconstructive procedures for vulvar cancer / breast cancer, as well as the application of the latest treatment methods for breast cancer (intraoperative radiation) and the establishment of an IVF therapy center (artificial insemination) in Homburg.

Milestones in his work at the Saarland University Medical Center included a. the conceptual development and the relocation of the new building of the university women's and children's clinic as the basis for the perinatal center I (1995) including a prenatal diagnosis center DEGUM level III, the foundation and certification (DKG) of the breast center (in 2000 and 2005), the establishment of the ivF center in 1995 and the introduction of the intrabeam irradiation technique (IORT) for early breast cancer (2007).

Honors

In recognition of his commitment to further medical training, he was awarded the Ernst von Bergmann plaque by the German Medical Association and he received honorary doctorates from Semmelweis University in Budapest and Iuliu Hatieganu University in Cluj / Romania in 1999.

He is an honorary member of the Hungarian Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics and has been President of the German-Spanish Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics for many years.

Since 2000 he has been an active member of the ethics committee of the Saarland Medical Association.
