Werner Thomas (Linguist)

Werner Thomas (born November 14, 1923 in Neugersdorf , Upper Lusatia ; † January 1, 2008 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) was a German linguist and President of the Scientific Society at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt .

Life

Thomas studied linguistics, in 1956 he became a public lecturer in Göttingen . In 1959, he received a call to the chair of Indo-European Linguistics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University . He taught all of Indo-European Studies, from Irish to Indian. After his retirement he taught at the Institute for Comparative Linguistics at the university. His main research focus was Tocharian , an extinct Indo-European language discovered in Chinese Turkestan at the beginning of the 20th century .

Werner Thomas was President of the Scientific Society at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt from 1984 until his death, which celebrated its centenary in 2006. Since 1964 he was a member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature in the field of Indo-European Linguistics, especially typology, non-European languages; older language levels, historical linguistics.
