The Werther Mühle is a tower windmill in the Werth district of the city of Isselburg in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Issel River .
history
The mill dates from 1498 . Originally it was part of the fortifications of the city of Werth as a defense tower . In the 16th century it was converted into a grain mill and has an almost completely preserved drive and grinder from 1554.
In 1964 further modifications were made, the actual grinding activity of the mill was stopped. The city of Isselburg has owned the windmill since 1994 . The last renovation work should be completed with a party on June 21, 2009, but was delayed until September.
On the occasion of the 2010 Christmas market, which was held around the mill for the first time, Volksbank Bocholt donated a stainless steel V2A steel bench with a picture of the mill on the back and seat.
description
The conical windmill tower made of bricks has six floors with a cap height of approx. 23 m. The boat-shaped canopy is turned into the wind by an internal rake, the oldest tracking system for windmills. The windmill was driven with sail gate blades , initially it could be driven by the Issel with a water wheel even when there was no wind. In the past, the mill could only be entered via an external staircase (fortified tower). A stone intermediate floor was later installed. Around 1890 preparations were made to install an electric motor in the foundation of the first floor. This motor should drive an additional grinding gear. It was not until 1935 that a diesel engine and then an electric motor were installed.
