The name Weserpark primarily refers to the shopping center located in the south-east of Bremen with around 170 retail, catering and service areas today. In addition, the name Weserpark also describes the directly adjacent Weserpark area, on which other retail and leisure facilities are located. The Weserpark location is one of the largest agglomerations of its kind in northern Germany in terms of size, structure and diversity of both retail and leisure activities.

Weserpark area

On the Weserpark area, right next to the shopping center, there is the furniture store “Schulenburg” , a Hornbach DIY and garden center Bauhaus DIY and garden center , and the Smartcenter Bremen. There is also the Kristallpalast, which with eleven cinemas offers the largest range of cinemas in the city of Bremen, a bowling alley, a children's play area and various dining options. The oasis with its sauna, fitness and wellness offers is located in the immediate vicinity on 16,500 m².

history

The development of the Weserpark was largely initiated and designed by the Münster merchant Werner Steenken (born November 8, 1941, died September 2, 1998). A public road bordering the Weserpark is named after him.

Based on the Senate resolution of the city of Bremen in April 1986, the Weserpark opened as a retail park center in the spring of 1990 . This consisted of 60 retail spaces, mainly specialist markets. The specialty store center was a nationwide novelty, as for the first time in one building mainly large areas (specialty stores) for retailers such as Real, Media Markt, Praktiker Baumarkt and Alfatex Stoffmarkt were combined under one roof and supplemented by small shops and catering offers.

Just one year later, the adjacent Aquadrome opened and offered bathing fun for the whole family. A wave pool with water slides and an adjoining sauna area were the first leisure facilities at the Weserpark site. In 1998, the leisure pool was redesigned into a large sauna and fitness facility, the oasis, in order to take account of the changed leisure behavior.

In the following years the plans for the expansion of the shopping center and also for the expansion of the location in the southern area, which had been planned from the beginning, became more concrete. In March 1996, the Möbel Klingeberg department store, now Möbel Schulenburg, opened. The expansion of the shopping center was also completed in 1996, bringing around 30 more retailers to the location, including Peek & Cloppenburg and C&A , and developing the Weserpark from a specialist retail center into a hybrid shopping center . In the summer of 1997 a petrol station was completed on the site and in September 1998 the Smartcenter Bremen was established at the Weserpark site.

The Kristallpalast cinema and entertainment complex was opened in November 1999 and has since underlined the spacious catchment area of the Weserpark. From 2003 to 2004, the interior of the mall was renovated and various changes were made to the structure of the retail occupancy.

From October 2012 to October 2014, the shopping center was extensively modernized inside and out, adding an area of around 12,000 m². In addition, parking spaces were created on the roof of this new part of the building. With the construction of a multi-storey car park for around 1,200 parking spaces, the Weserpark area has a total of around 4,700 parking spaces. As a result of the expansion and modernization, the Weserpark shopping center developed from the hybrid mall created in 1996 into a classic shopping center. In the course of the reopening in autumn 2014, the shopping center was repositioned. A changed Weserpark logo and a new advertising campaign were introduced.

The new shopping center

The Weserpark shopping center today comprises around 155 retail stores including large specialist markets. The largest rental units include the fashion retailers ZARA , Adler , P&C, C&A and Reserved, as well as the Real hypermarket and the electronics retailer Media Markt . There are also a large number of service providers such as B. hairdresser, travel agency, post office, key service, cleaning with tailoring as well as a pharmacy. The shopping center has a noteworthy gastronomic offer and offers cafes, restaurants and snack bars, as well as the large Pott un Pann food court with around 380 seats.

The service offered by the Weserpark consists of childcare in the form of a children's play area on around 2,000 m², a baby changing room, lockers and mother and child parking spaces. There is free WiFi throughout the center. The car park has two parking spaces that allow electric cars to be charged.

Events

Various events with changing themes take place in the Weserpark shopping center throughout the year. The Top Job training fair takes place every year together with the Bremen Chamber of Commerce. There are also regular travel and sustainability fairs, car and fashion shows.

The Weserpark is also open to associations and organizations: The German Red Cross not only regularly asks for blood donation here, but also provides information about its offers of help. The center also offers a platform for culture with exhibitions and activities.

Transport links

The Weserpark is in close proximity to the Bremer Kreuz ( A1 / A27 ). In addition, the Weserpark area has very good public transport connections. Tram line 1 leads directly from the main train station to the center, and bus lines 37, 38, 39 and 740 can also be used to reach the location. The proximity of the location to the Bremen-Mahndorf train station offers a short connection to the local public transport of Deutsche Bahn on the Bremen - Hanover route.
