The wasp glass winged or oak glass winged ( Synanthedon vespiformis ) is a butterfly from the family of the glass winged (Sesiidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 18 to 24 millimeters. With their appearance, they imitate the black and yellow signal colors of the wasps ( mimicry ). The phenotypic appearance is less like a butterfly than a hover fly with the warning color mentioned . The flight noise produced by the wasp-glass winged was also adapted to the flight of wasps. In addition to the transparent wings typical of glass-winged animals, the animals have a bushy end of the abdomen that is yellow in the females and black in the males.

Occurrence

The species is found all over Europe , except in the north, but is generally not very common. It flies from late May to late August and likes to sit on flowers.

Way of life

The larvae live under the bark of oaks , but sometimes also on beeches and poplars . It takes two years to develop.
