West London Synagogue as seen from the junction of Hampden Gurney Street and Upper Berkeley Street
The West London Synagogue ( English West London Synagogue of British Jews ), abbreviated WLS ( Hebrew
ק"ק שער ציון Qahal Qadosch Sha'ar Zion , ' Holy Congregation Gate of Zion') is a Reformed synagogue near Marble Arch in London . The synagogue was built in 1870 and is one of the oldest synagogues in the United Kingdom.
On April 15, 1840, 24 members of the congregations of the Sephardic Bevis-Marks Synagogue Congregation and the Ashkenazi Great Synagogue Congregation canceled their membership in order to found a new congregation “for British Jews” (“neither Germans nor Portuguese”). On January 27, 1842, the West London Synagogue was established in a chapel on Burton Street. The growing congregation moved to new premises on Margaret Street in 1848, and finally, in 1870, the new synagogue on Upper Berkley Street, which could accommodate 1,000 people.
