Distances on the West Coast Highway from Swanbourne

The West Coast Highway is a main road in Perth in the southeast of the Australian state of Western Australia . It connects Curtin Avenue in Swanbourne along the coast with Marmion Avenue in Trigg . The road is designated as State Road 71 (S71) and in sections is also called Tourist Route 204 (T204). It thus connects Fremantle with the northern suburbs of Perth. The speed limit is generally 80 km / h. In inhabited areas it is reduced to 60–70 km / h. The road has four lanes with a median for most of the route.

course

The West Coast Highway begins on Curtin Avenue (S71) in Swanbourne , a western suburb of Perth, right on the coast of the Indian Ocean . It leads north, past the Campbell Barracks of the SAS , to City Beach, Scarborough and Trigg . There it ends at Karrinyup Road and becomes Marmion Avenue (S71).

history

In the 1940s, the highway was a narrow coastal road (called the Coast Road ) between Swanbourne and North Beach . Previously, coastal settlements such as North Beach and Mullaloo were only accessible via dirt roads from Wanneroo Road . At the end of the 1960s, this small coastal road was significantly expanded and extended to Mullaloo Beach .

In the mid-1970s, the section through City Beach was re-routed so that the former Challenger Drive (inland) and the West Coast Highway (on the coast) all the way to Scarborough ran on the same route. The southernmost stretch through Swanbourne was renamed Rochdale Road . In 1984 the highway was extended north to Ocean Reef Road .

At that time, Marmion Avenue had already replaced the West Coast Highway as the main road connecting the northern suburbs and the suburb of Swanbourne had its problems with through traffic. In 1985/1986, shortly before the designation of the new system of state roads, the highway was led directly north of Scarborough inland on its present route to reach Marmion Avenue on Karrinyup Road. And the section south of City Beach has been diverted to Servetus Road in Swanbourne.

The northern two-thirds of the highway have been split up and given new names:

  • West Coast Drive from Trigg to Hepburn Avenue and Hillary Boat Harbor
  • Whitfords Avenue to Withfords Avenue (east-west)
  • Northshore Drive to Mullaloo Drive
  • Oceanside Promenade to Ocean Reef Road

With the exception of the Scarborough route, all route sections were continuous.

By the year 2000, Servetus Road had developed into exactly the same bottleneck as Rochdale Road before 1985. A new section of the West Coast Highway was built in a ditch (because of the noise protection for the residents) directly next to Servetus Street, which became a normal Local connecting road was downgraded. The Curtin Avenue to Fremantle has also been expanded.
