Coordinates: 41 ° 12 ′  S , 146 ° 48 ′  E The West Tamar Municipality is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Tasmania . The area is 689 km² and has about 23,000 inhabitants (2016).

The West Tamar Municipality is located on the central north coast of the island about 195 kilometers north of the capital Hobart . The area comprises 28 districts and towns: Badger Head, Beaconsfield , Beauty Point, Blackwall , Bridgenorth, Clarence Point, Deviot, Exeter, Flowery Gully, Franford, Glengarry , Gravelly Beach, Greens Beach, Grindelwald , Holwell, Lanena, Legana, Loira, Kayena, Kelso, Notley Hills, Riverside, Robigana, Rosevears, Rowella, Swan Point, Winkleigh and York Town. The seat of the council is in Beaconsfield in the northern half of the LGA, where about 1000 people live (2016).

The West Tamar Council has nine members. The mayor (mayor), his deputy (deputy) and seven councilors are directly elected by the residents of the LGA. West Tamar is not divided into districts.
