The West German University Press (until 2014 Bochum University Press) is a spin-off from the Ruhr University Bochum .

founding

The spin-off from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum took place in 1999 with funds from the Ministry for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the program for the financial security of business start-ups from universities (PFAU). In 1998 the model of the Harvard University Press was studied on site to prepare for the founding, some elements for the founding in Germany could be adopted.

Memberships

When it was founded, the university publisher became a member of the German Book Trade Association . Since 2003 he has been a member of the European University Press , a network of European university publishers, and since 2014 of the International Association of University Presses .

Publishing program

Over 400 books and journals are currently available, about half of which are dissertations, the other half conference volumes and commemorative publications, research papers, post-doctoral theses and scripts. 44 book series are kept, some of which are edited by chairs or faculties of the Ruhr University Bochum. The four journals are peer reviewed and represented in various impact lists, including the floristic newsletters in the Thomson Reuters Masterlist of Journals.

Westdeutsche Universitätsverlag only disseminates research results from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) or results that are written or published by RUB authors. The publisher's task is to help ensure that the university's academic output is represented in libraries around the world with books and journals. The university publisher is represented at the Frankfurt Book Fair every year . New publications are now produced hybrid, as a book (often hardcover) and electronically, sometimes open access .

advancement

Universitätsverlag supports outstanding work from its own resources and helps with applying for grants and awards at national level. Since its inception, the publishing house has obtained grants of over 100,000 euros for RUB authors. The university publisher receives a large part of its budget from public funds and is supported by the non-profit association "Friends and Sponsors of Bochum University Press". The university publishing house gets by without direct financial support from the Ruhr University Bochum.

Cooperation with the university

Universitätsverlag cooperates with the Ruhr-Universität and its immediate environment through around 20 contracts at different levels. Chairs and institutes publish book series in the university publishing house. The organs of the university publishing house are the board of trustees, the advisory board, the management and the quality committee (faculty board). All organs are made up exclusively of RUB authors.
