Wester Kames Castle is a castle on the Scottish island of Bute . It is located in the east of the island near the village of Port Bannatyne and Kames Bay . In 1971 Wester Kames Castle was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category A.

history

The small castle was built in either the late 16th or early 17th centuries, in the same period as the nearby Kames Castle . It was the seat of the Spenses of Wester Kames, whose family history can be traced back to the 15th century. At the end of the 19th century, Wester Kames Castle was largely in ruins and only survived up to a height of about four meters. Between 1895 and 1905 the building was restored by Robert Weir Schultz at the behest of John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute . Attention was paid to a true-to-original and harmonious reconstruction. The height of the ruins is now marked by a row of red bricks.

description

The building rises four floors from a floor area of approximately 7.5 mx 6.5 m. The windows are arranged asymmetrically. It consists of quarry stone, which is set off at the building edges with corner stones made of sandstone . At the northeast corner there is a small corner tower with a conical roof at the level of the top floor . The building ends with a slate-covered gable roof . The gable surfaces are made as a stepped gable . The facades are partly plastered using the traditional Harling technique.
