The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada (formerly Western Canada Aviation Museum ) is an aviation museum located at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg, Manitoba Province , Canada . It is the second largest aviation museum in the country. The exhibits are housed in a former hangar of Trans-Canada Air Lines (now Air Canada ) from the 1930s.

history

The Western Canada Aviation Museum was established in 1974 with the aim of preserving and showcasing Canadian aircraft development, specifically in Winnipeg, a center of aviation in the country. The spectrum ranges from bush planes to military aircraft as well as private and commercial aircraft.

On December 19, 2014, the museum was renamed The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada .

There is also an exhibition on Canadian women in aviation, flight simulators, a Black Brant sounding rocket (built in Manitoba by Bristol Aerospace ), a collection of airmail envelopes, one signed by Charles Lindbergh and another signed by Orville Wright .

Archives and Library

The aviation library housed in the museum is one of the largest of its kind in Canada and also contains around 40,000 photographs, films and audio documents. There are also a number of unique items in the collection.

Cooperations / memberships

The museum is part of the Canadian Museums Association , the Canadian Heritage Information Network and the Virtual Museum of Canada .
