The Westerwaldkaserne is a former location of the Bundeswehr in Montabaur since 1965. From 1966 to 1993 it housed the rocket artillery battalion 350 , which is part of the nuclear participation for the use of nuclear weapons ( Sergeant rocket with the nuclear warhead W52 with an explosive capacity of 200 KT; or the Lance missile ) was intended. The barracks was also the location of repair units (InstAusbZentrum, Staff InstRgt 5 and parts of Inst.Btl 310 and, at times, a driver training unit). The Federal Ministry of Defense announced the planned closure in 2001; use by the German Armed Forces ended in 2005 and thus the history of Montabaur as a garrison town. For the site and the 16 remaining buildings, the municipality set itself the task of converting and reusing the approximately 35 hectare area. Because a similarly large industrial area at the Montabaur ICE train station had been developed almost at the same time as the barracks became vacant, the barracks were left vacant for several years. An urban development contract with an investor was therefore only signed in July 2013.
