The Westphalian Terrier is a nationally recognized German dog breed (Group 3, Section 1 Tall Terriers, VDH Standard No. 992) by the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (VDH ).
Origin and history
The Westphalian Terrier was created around 1970 in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia . The founder of the race Westfalen Terrier at that time the race was German Hunting Terrier biddable too little and showed him a very strong field. The first crossings of German hunting terriers and Lakeland terriers as well as German hunting terriers and fox terriers took place . The aim of breeding was a small, easy-to-use, clear-cut and tolerable terrier for the hunt that could be led by anyone. Over the course of a few years, the type was consolidated with the occasional re-crossing of fox terriers and, very rarely, German hunting terriers. Since May 19, 2020, the Westphalian Terrier has been nationally recognized as a dog breed by the Association for the German Canine System . A recognition by the FCI has not yet been made.

The Westphalian Terrier is a relatively small, dry body and strong, well-proportioned dog with well-developed muscles and strong bones. The hair of the Westphalian Terrier is thick and hard with a sufficient undercoat. The inside of the abdomen and thighs are also well covered with hair. The hair is easy to care for and should protect the dog well. Both straight-haired and rough-haired hair are permitted. The coat colors of the dogs are tan to whitish. A distinctive mask is desirable. Small white markings on the chest and toes are allowed. Black and tan dogs are undesirable but tolerated. Both males and females are 32 to 40 cm tall. The weight of a fully grown Westphalian Terrier is 8.5 to 10 kg.

The Westphalian Terrier is a small hunting dog with a solid character for use above and below ground. It is suitable for Fuchs blasting and the roof ditch for the track loud Flushing work on rabbits and other small game, for driven hunts for big game, in particular wild boars , for the water work , for retrieving light Wild as well as for welding work . Thanks to its small size and easy handling, the Westphalian Terrier is a pleasant dog that is easy to keep indoors.

In terms of behavior, the Westphalian Terrier is characterized as being calm and balanced and is compatible with other species. The dogs are eager to work and persevering as well as neither shy nor aggressive.
